well, this is not a clue but is a temporary solving for the problem. When the shutdown message apears, click on the start button an then open "RUN" type "shutdown -a" (without the quotes, and the shutdown message will disappear, this won fix anythin'but at least you can surf the web with no problems.

NOTE: you will have to do this every time the message will appear, after you restart your computer it will have no efect(anymore)

wouldn't a fresh install of Windows XP have removed all the viruses? I destroyed the partition that the old Windows 2000 was on and did a full format of the hard drive. After installing Windows XP twice and Windows 2000 once, i got the same 60 second shutdown on my first boot up with the fresh OS.

Can viruses survive a full format fresh install ?
thx

I have a problem with a system wanting to shutdown after logging onto the internet. I formatted the HD and installed WinXP, then installed the ISP software and Norton AV 2004. There are no viruses found. When I log onto the internet, after a few minutes, I get an error stating that the LSASS.EXE had an error. After this error I get the message that Windows is shutting down in 60 seconds. I can abort the shutdown process, but since the LSA service is no longer running, I cannot do anything that requires administrator privileges, including shutdown. Any ideas? HP Pavillion 8650, WinXP, AT&T Software, and NAV.

I checked the HP website, they dont recommend WinXP on this system. I also had the problem with Win2000. I may have to go back to Windows 98.

Thank you,
Dave

Until the beginning of this week I didn't had any problems with lsass.exe. My PC was runnig fine. THen I visited the window update site (as usual). There the problems started. Microsoft has updated their update site. A new program had to be installed in order to download and install the updates.
This went wrong. Each time I tried to install a program or a update(manualy or throug a automated updated site) , lsass died.
I scanned my computer with different program's no virusses, horses or other ugly stuff. I a desperate mood I followed the advise to download and install (manualy) the "sasser" update from Microsoft, mentioned in one of the earlier postings. Untill this far the problem seemded to be fixed (fingers crossed).

I just wanted to thank everyone, the solutions posted helped me solve the problem.

I posted in two place Smile.. sorry... but really thank you eveyone. Reading everyones post on the LSASS.Exe, and the solutions posted helped me solve my own lsass problem. Thanks.

By the way I ended up signing up to www.550access.com internet service when i visited the main site www.theispguide.com, so thanks again, I liked 550access because its $5.50 for 150 hrs of internet access, but for others that want unlimited dialup access you might want to consider visiting The ISP Guide site and see if you can find a cheaper isp for your needs Very Happy
