lucoms.exe is a part of Symantecs Internet security suite and deals with mainly live updates, which keep your product upto date from the latest security threats. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

LUCOMS~1.exe comes up when opening config norton antivirus.

Just noticed that this prog also opens when i go to my Norton Antivirus Configurations searched around the web, haven't really found anything.
I'm always paranoid with unknown application.

Thanks.

Go to log viewer Nortoin internet security and firewall -

An instance of "C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LuComServer_3_0.EXE" is preparing to access the Internet

As this starts in a DOS window - it gets shortened to 8 characters.exe with the ~ character replacing part of the filename
on my system this starts every 4 hours as scheduled and will impact services for about 4 mins
Some updates are larger than others I presume so hence more of an impact

So seems OK to me

Your are absolute right this LUCOMS~1.EXE handles automatic update for Norton Antivirus Security Suite and in most cases it is safe.

Hello there, I have been having the same problem with LUCOMS~1.EXE-02DB5950.pf, and after searching for google i found this forum. So, I could use some help.

This program seems to run every time i login to windows, and every 4 hours (or so). I know this is normal, but while it is running, my internet slows down noticibly or stops working completly.

Look at scheduled tasks under start/accessories/system tools and open the task for live update for norton antivirus. Sounds like yours is running too often? Mine is set for once every 4 hours...

I went to my schenduled tasks, and there is nothing there. Is there any other way I can change the auto-updates? As it is, I cannot deal with my internet shuting down every four hours.

Forgive me, I am a novice at computers. I know the basics, but thats pretty much it.

How can I stop LUCOMS^1.exe the Automatic Live Update process from running? It auto-starts at boot yet never updates my virus protection and prevents me from running Norton's Live Update by request from the NAV window as I have always done before LUCOMS became an auto-start process on my PC. Since this has auto-started, my virus protection has been out of date. This copy of Norton Anti Virus 2006 is part of the NAV Home Protection Pack and isn't the copy that's registered. Typically, I must manually run Live Update weekly from the NAV window whereas the registered Live Update on my other PC automatically starts up in the background periodically without issue. This "always running" LUCOMS prevents me not only from running Live Update, but also from removing it from my system STARTUP List, or SERVICE List, and from Removing NAV and Live Update 3.0 programs from my system via Control Panel. All these attempts fail with a message that the auto live update is already running. Any attempt to end the process fails, including using SAFE mode. And my attempts to either turn off Live Update for the NAV Options Menu, or to run Norton's Removal Tool or Auto Fix Tool fail with a message that my security settings don't allow ActiveX Control and JavaScript to run. Yet my settings for these say only disable ActiveX if it is unsafe, and Javascipt is allowed. A chat with a Norton support rep got me nowhere after 2 hours of trying what he said.

as with most viruses, lucoms~1.exe could be a virus or it could be an integral part of your system (in this case your anti-vrus program).

before you do anything rash, find out if you are using any symantec products that update themselves regularly. if so, do not delete or end this process. instead go to a symantec help page and see if they have more detailed info.

if you do not have any symantec products, and the lucoms~1.exe file is in an unusual folder, then it is probably a virus and should be deleted. if you are in doubt, i recommend the security task manager. it's free here:
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/download.html
it tells you where the files are located on your system so you don't have to search for them and also gives you a rating from 0-100 of how similar the file is to a virus or spyware.

whilst lucoms1.exe is part of norton LUCOMS~1.exe is an attempt to use your computer similar to dumprep -01. It deceitfully uses a file name very similar to one used by an essential system in the hope you won't delete it. The easist way to check is the day it gives for it's creation( when you search for similar names on files). Most windows dates will be sometime ago, any file created the day you started noticing a slowdown is likely a virus. Very Happy

sirivanhoe i don't know what i'm talking about but, that something appeared on your computer recently seems inadequet information to me to assume to delete a potentially critical file. windows or norton update? i just noticed this program in my task manager for the first time and found this forum by google. i have norton, i searched for both files you mentioned, and found lucoms~1.exe but not lucoms1.exe. although it's in the windows\prefetch folder with which i'm unfamiliar, a lack of lucoms1.exe doesn't make me want to delete the other one according to your advice.

My computer was slowing down and task mngr showed lucoms~1 was running. I was running Symantec Live Update v.3.1. I went to Symantec and downloaded Live Update v 3.2. Computer is back to normal running speed. May be worth a try!

Chem you were wondering if there is a lucoms~.exe removal tool.

I know of no such thing, but there is a way to disable the symantec live update.

To Enable or Disable symantec live in Norton Antir virus click the Norton Anti Virus Tab in Norton Anti Virus. Next, click the settings folder. Now click Automatic Updates live. From there you click turn: off or configure. In configure you have a checked box to disable it.

Like everyone has been saying, Symantec live updates every four hours. Like me some of you can not afford to have it slow down your performance when it does this. If you do disable and enable it for times when you can afford to run it, be dilligent in frequently manually updating .

The advice from Charlie123 is not only dead wrong, it seems malicious. The Lucom Server is integral to Symantec's LiveUpdate process. Disabling it invites invasion (see above on Beagle).
