WAP 011a configuration problems |
|
|
I am still having problems configuring my wireless network, I have spent months installing it and now it doesn't work properly.Any help would be great as I am only competent working with Ip's and stuff until they don't work! my problem is as follows,
I have a pc connected to broadband (bt openworld, dynamic ip) via a modem. onnected to the ethernet port of this pc is a WAP011a. the pc's ethernet port ip address is set to 192.168.1.2 (subnet 255.255.255.0) the wap 011a is setup in AP mode and still has the ip 192.168.1.1. I also have a laptop sporting a 3com wireless card, this has an ip of 192.168.1.3 (same subnet as above) the internet connection is set to shared but no joy getting internet access on the laptop (although does show a connection to the wireless network). Any Ideas, do I have to enter a default gatewy ip? (this is the point at where I get lost)
give me suggestion. |

It sounds like you need to disable and reenable internet connection sharing to me. Once you do that you will find that the PC will have IP 192.168.0.1 (which I think is 'fixed' and ICS will only work with that setting) and so the AP will need to be something like 192.168.0.2 and then the laptop can be 192.168.0.3 and it will work.
(all subnet 255.255.255.0)
Alternatively, you will find that once ICS is setup correctly, it will act as a DHCP server and so will auto allocate IP's the rest of the items on the network and probably wireless too.
The default gateway should be the same as the IP thats actually connected to the net (192.168.1.2 for your current setup but after re-enabling ICS it should be 192.168.0.1) and the ICS machine will also act as a DNS relay so the DNS should work with the same address |

| Thanks for that it makes sense, so if I reset the internet sharing and set all items on the network to obtain ips automatically all should be good? what about setting the ap to DHCP, because I find when you do that you lose all configuration control of the device?I will try your suggestions tomorrow when I get a chance and let you know what happens! |

I would set a fixed IP for the AP (like 192.168.0.10 or something - anything except 192.168.0.1) if it causes the problems you mention.
Here is a comprehensive guide to ICS if you would like any more info:
http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-arch.asp
and it deals with wireless issues too I believe but maybe there is too much info. If so, post here and we will see if we can help! |
