Connecting 2 wireless routers |
|
|
Heres the situation, i have a long ranch house and 2 wireless routers - one on each end of the house connected with a wire. They both have the same SSID and WEP keys, but i want my laptops to recognize them as the same thing. Currently they see 2 AP's and are able to switch between them when tell them to do so, but i want them to see 1 AP and not have to switch manually. So please if you know how please let me know.
Thanks, |

Generally your store bought wireless access points do not have this funtionality.
What will probably work is to change your access points to work in Ad-Hoc mode. Ad-Hoc mode does not require association to the Access Point. Association is used to make sure that your wireless workstation is taking to one access point for administrative and security purposes. Ad-Hoc just throws out a signal and if something is listening it will respond accordingly. Some access point have a repeater option that should do what you are looking for. This does require that the repeater is able to receive the signal from the originating Access Point. The ability to repeat is not available for all access points. |

| Do you know what repeaters are good and how much they cost? If they are reasonable where can i get one? Also, i have 2 linksys befsw11s4 wireless routers, so to change to ad-hoc does that mean just remove the WEP key or is there something else i need to do. |

| A typical wireless access point will not run in ad-hoc mode. It only supports infrastructure mode. A repeater or "range extender" is probably your best bet. You can buy a repeater online if you can't find one at your local electronics dealer. Linksys makes one, so does D-Link. |
