I was away but when I came back on monday I uninstalled the printer (lexmark Z605) I have uninstalled and re installed the drivers. It is a usb connection straight to the pc. After I have re installed the drivers and try to print it will only say print to file. I checked the help files and they say to make sure the printer is set to usb and that the port is open. I dont know how to do this and have never come across this before. I have uninstalled it again and thought I would ask for some advice before i continue to try again. Any ideas anyone? I have windows 98se. the printer is only a few months old.

Go to Control Panel / Printers
Remove ALL the printers listed there by right clicking on them and selecting 'Delete'Power off your Printer and unplug the USB cable from the printer.
Reboot your PC.
Power on the printer and plug in the USB cable. 98 should then see the USB printer and apply the installed drivers. At the moment your are probably trying to print to LPT1.
Let us know how you get on.

I tried what you said a couple of times but kept getting an error message Printer cannot be installed. Hmmmm, WIN98's USB support has never been the best.

Does 98 recognose that there is even a USB device there when you plug it in ? (try unplugging and plugging the USB cable whilst 98 is running)
Is there anything in 'Printers' ? or is that now empty - if the printer is ther click on Properties to see which port it is trying to print to.
