Transferring files using direct cable connect
I have a new computer running WInXP Home, and am trying to transfer files to it from my old one (called OEMComputer) which runs Win98. I have the 2 computers connected using a parallel computer, and have been successful in connecting them using Direct Cable Connection in the old one (Host) and Network connections in the XP machine. I get a message saying that they are connected via Parallel cable on LPT1.
I have also set the C: drive on the host computer as shared, with a shared name of HARDDRIVE, with no restrictions or password.
However, when I try to access the old machine C: drive by running \\OEMComputer\HARDDRIVE on the new one, I get an error message that the network path was not found. Likewise, in Explorer, if I click on Tools, Map Network Drive, and enter F: in Drive, and \\OEMComputer\HARDDRIVE in Folder, it can't find the path again.
What am I doing wrong, and how can I fix it?
try this :
In your network connection properties, go to the File and Printer Sharing properties and then check if, under Browse Master, the value is Enabled. If it says Automatic or Disabled, change it to Enabled.
Also make sure that the workgroup is the same on both computers.

the problem is the security settings on the 2000 os
Can't believe I'm actually giving the response here.. but here goes. I ran into the same exact problem, attempting to have ME as the host and 2000 as guest with a parallel direct connection. Would receive a signon for name, password and domain. Then, upon attempting to signon.. would receive the error 691. ARHGHG... I tried everything.
The problem is within the 2000 security settings. On the 2000 box..
1. Start, Settings, Network and Dial-up connections, Select and Right-Click on your "parallel connection" (assuming you already created). Then select properties
2. Choose the Security Tab, Check Advanced Settings, Click on Settings Button
3. Select... Allow these protocols:
* Check - Allow older MS-CHAP version for Windows 95 servers.
* Uncheck the last selection – For MS-CHAP based protocols,
automatically use my windows logon name and password (and domain
if any).
Any of the other selections can be checked or not.
4. Click OK, Select Yes when asked if you want to keep the new settings
5. Select Options Tab, Check only Display progress while connecting,
6. OK
and then let er' rip. The post is probably too late for you by now, but may help someone else seeking the same.
