Broadband Router or ADSL Router
Broadband Router or ADSL Router:
I'm planning on getting broadband with plusNet very soon. I want to share is with 4 computers. I am not sure whether a broadband or adsl router would be better...
The broadband router would be more expensive, but I think performance would be better It is also future-proof. But surely by getting just one box there are less things to break?
Both Broadband and ADSL routers can typically handle speeds of up to 8 Mbps WAN (internet) speed, and 100 Mbps wired LAN (your home network) speed. At current broadband speeds, either ADSL or Broadband routers are sufficiently fast for internet applications. The advantage of an all in one solution is it is usually more cost effective. The advantage of separate units is that if you need to make a change, you do not have to replace everything. I.E Upgrading to ADSL2.
A two-box solution typically offers higher funtionality- Super-G wireless is not currently avaible in a 1-box solution, despite being around for ages now. Also, if you switch to Cable (or satelite) broadband in the future, an ADSL router would not function. However, it is both cheaper and easier to set up to go for a 1-box solution.
