Netgear Wireless router and PowerBook G4

I have successfully installed the Netgear Wireless Router DG834G router on my desktop computer but am experiencing diffuculties connecting my Apple PowerBook G4 laptop in the network - when selecting the NETGEAR network it says 'An error occurred while trying to join the selected network.

When trying to configure my computer to the network it says ' The Airport admin utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station'.

I have spoken to Netgear and they say because the router is working and the desktop computer has a connection - the problem lies with the mac. Powerbook G4 (17 inch) has airport Extreme cards built in so i thought there would be no problem.

Can you confirm / change the following on the DG834G
 Change the SSID from NETGEAR i.e. AP1001
 Change wireless channel to 6
 Confirm Access List is not enabled
 Broadcast SSID is enabled
 Security encryption disabled
Airport Configuration 9.x
1. Open TCP/IP in the Control Panel under the Apple Menu.
2. Select Airport in the Connect via
3. Select Using DHCP Server in the Configure window
4. Click Options and uncheck Load only when needed box
5. Select Active, click OK, and then Save when prompted
6. Open the Airport application by clicking on the Apple menu and highlighting the icon.
7. Select AP1001 in the Choose Network
Airport Configuration Mac OSX
1. Open System Preferences in the Apple Menu or on the Dock.
2. Select Network in the System Preferences window and then the TCP/IP
3. Select Show and choose Airport in the pull-down menu
4. Select Configure and choose Using DHCP
5. Click the Airport Tab and choose AP101 in the Preferred Network pull-down menu.
6. Click on the Airport icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Highlight Open Internet Connect... in the menu. The Internet Connect window will open
7. Select Airport in the Configuration pull-down menu. The Signal Level will activate.

It may take 3 or more attempts to connect to the wireless network using AirPort. This is an issue in the Apple client which does not allow a sufficient timeout period for the Access Point to respond.
Regards
Ben
