Links not responding, IE 6 freezes when I click a link
Most of the time just recently, when I click a link to anything, anywhere on any random site, my mouse pointer stays as a pointing finger. I can move the mouse, but it's like my browser is just frozen, and I can't click on anything else. I always have to do Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the task, and then it gives me a second box that says "End now" or "Cancel." I choose "End Now" and then it closes out every window I have open. A lot of times I can't even close windows I have open by using the "X" up in the corner, I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Del, and end the task.
I am running Windows XP, IE 6, and I have a firewall, but I turn it off usually because it really slows me down. I have cable internet access. |

I had the same problem. Not any more I switched to Mozilla Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client. What a difference. Unlike IE, Firefox is viitually free of vulnerabilities and you don't get pop-ups. Micro-soft have just released another 21 security patches for IE and Windows. It's a joke. Mozilla seldom have any security blips. If you want to download, go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ It's free.
One cause of problems with IE6 (among others) is running it with Windows 98. They don't sleep well together. Speaking from experience.
Hope this helps. |

Good grief, Denny. Just re-read your post and noted your remark about switching off your firewall. Running without a firewall on broadband is suicidal. Absolutely essential these days.
By the way, you sound as if you are not too computer-savvy (no offence intended). Have you tried clearing your temporary internet files? Do you run defrag at least once a fortnight? Have you got an anti-spyware programme such as Spybot? Spyware can cause myriad problems.
If you would like a list of good spyware freebies, email me at overdrive@dea.spamcon.org I shall not be on the net after the 19th Oct. Back on the 26th. |

If anybody has the answer to this problem please let me know too. I am running Win XP (SP-2) and it seems like it started about the time I downloaded Service Pack 2. I don't believe it can be from a bug because I am running Norton Anti-virus 2004, Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE. Every time I press CTL+ALT+DEL to close the offending program, I open the dialog box containing the error info. It's always a "hanging app." It's driving me crazy!!!!!!! |

Ronald, why don't you give Firefox a go? Tomorrows browser today. I can tell you, it's computing as you would like it to be. Installing is a breeze, as is importing bookmarks. Thunder bird email, likewise. Now over one million users, so it can't be bad. Take a look at the link I gave earlier.
IE is a pain and will never be any good. It's full of vulnerabilities, hence all the patches. Good riddance. |

This problem seems flooded recently. I am running an e-commerce website, and have got lots of lots of complains in recent days for the problem of "not responding" when they clicked the submit button. Many customers clicked twice or even three or five times when they are waiting impatiently. As result, they are charged more than once.
I myself also has this problem in home computer with Yahoo SBC DSL. For any website with dynamic HTML (PHP, for example), if I click the link without waiting for the entire page displayed, I'll wait forever. I have to close the IE and restart it. I don't know whether it is the IE problem, or the Internet Server problem, or the problem from the service provider like Yahoo SBC? I have to find a solution. |

browser freezing up |
|
|
| I am having the same problem. I go to school online and have recently failed a test due to my browser freezing up during the test. I have tried everything. I am using sbc yahoo dsl, norton ativirus and ad-aware. I have tried deleting my cookies and files. Nothing is working. I seem to have started having this problem when I downloaded microsoft beta, which I have uninstalled trying to fix this problem and it didn't work. Has anyone figured out how to fix it? |

IE Freeze ups and/or sluggish behaviour can sometimes be cause by a corrupt cache file which may require manual intervention by the user. See this this link for instruction on how to manually delete the cache

| I'm sorry - I got a similar problem. IE works fine but none of the hyperlinks work! I can't install Flash either. There no messages, no diagnostics and no help. This is pathetic! |

As a temporary fix ( just to stop the freezing and open your link)
when the browser freezes after clicking, right click the window that is frozen on the taskbar (right click the taskbar item of your window) then click in your frozen window, Your link will open in a new window, and the other page will unfreeze. but yes, M$ is pathetic for not adressing this huge problem... |
