How do I get Linux to use my cable modem?
I got my cable modem about a month ago and since then I am trying to set up it for Linux But no success. I can't get my provider to do it because they do not have any technicians. It would be appreciated if someone could help me out.
I experienced same problem before sometime. I am using the @home service with Debian2.2 I can configure the IP, Subnet, DNS, and Gateway, but Linux fails to recognize my DHCP Address. I can establish an Internet connection, but @home 'leases' the IP addresses to its users. Meaning that next month. Ill have a different IP address. When this happens, I no longer have access my Linux Server. I cant get any tech support from the ISP and as well as the Linux OS support.
If anyone have any useful info on this topic. Please advise.
Thanks
My provider switched modems when they went from three-way to two-way service. In the process, they substituted 3COM's new Shark fin modem.
Guess what? It wouldn't work with Linux the DHCP negotiation process wouldn't work.
After some discussion, the Cable Guys admitted that they had some 3COM CMX modems and the CMX worked just fine. So, beware of modems that don't follow the DHCP Standards.
