Cable Modem Networking
I want to make a network of all three of my computers in my house i see that my IP Address might have some problem. I am with @home and how could i go about and network my computers via Ethernet without getting a new IP Address. Can i do it without a Router or not ?
Yes, If you're running Win98 or higher, you can use the Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) i.e. built into Windows. Basically, all you need to do is install ICS software on your computer that already have a assigned IP Address, then on the rest of them enabled by using DHCP address.
you will need a second network card in the computer i.e. connected to the @home modem. This connected with your hub.The alternate cost effective option is to buy a Linksys cable/DSL router without using hub. This router is also a 4 port 10baseT hub.
I see that many cable modems and DSL systems are connected with the modem directly via hub. Here, the hub isn't used. You need second NIC to make network of two machines.
I already done this at work and with my friends machines as well. The machines are linked to the hub via cable or DSL modem. One machine has IP address assigned by the ISP, preferably on which machine the ICS enabled on it. Then it's simple matter of going to other machines on the network by enabling DHCP server. At work, we have 2 Win98, 1 Win95 and 1 Win2K PCs. One of my clients has the same setup with PCs running on a Win95, a Win98, a WinME, 2 WinNT workstation, a Win NT Server and 3 Win 2000 Professional PCs.

Diiferent type of Cable Modem Networking
It's a funny incident, that when my ISP Installer came at my work Place to set it up & he insisted that it wouldn't work on that way. I told him, don't worry about putting free NIC in and just set it up with the existing NIC and leave one as free. He laughed at me and said it would knock it off the network as the modem would have to connect to that card directly. When he was done, I connected the machine to the hub, the modem to the hub and all the machines had internet before he got out the door.
