Cable Modem LAN Client Settings while real time games
Hello again!
At home, I have two computers hooked up on a LAN that share a Cable Modem.
I am using 5-port hub and a NIC on the server with Internet Sharing Software (ICS) from Sygate along with a standard 3COM 10mbps card to the Modem. On client, I uses another 10mbps card.
My problem occues while real time games. I don't know if you are familar with these terms or not, I explained it here:
*lag* - this is say when you go to open a door and it takes 3 seconds to actually open. Symptoms of an obviously slow connection.
*warp* - this is when you are running along a corridor when suddenly you "warp" or teleport back to the beginning where you started. I imagine this is to do with lost packets or some such?
On the client computer,I see that no lag but loads of warp. I can only say that this is with our LAN setup since the same doesn't occur on the Server computer. Are there known problems with some types of NIC/hubs that give rise to lost packets and hence frequent resending of data?
Just a guess the NIC might be from the Sygate. Any time, you use a "proxy" strange things can happen and I think Sygate Application is proxy based. If you have Win98SE on the "server", you might try using ICS and see if this makes a difference.
What protocols are you using besides TCP/IP?
