IPX/SPX Protocol Errors
Currently, I am trying to repair my work PC Network. There are 3 computers connected with the hub. I tested them with my laptop and only one computer works. They all have the same Client and Protocols and all are in the same workgroup.
The adaptor I used is a Realtek RTL8029 and two NE 2000 Cards.
One of the NE 2000 cards, shows error: "Error while loading protocol 1. Error 254". The protocol it complains about is IPX but only when I enable NETBIOS. Any idea about that error?
The other NE 2000 card doesn't have any problems with the protocols but still wont connect with other computers.
Get rid of IPX on all of them and load up NETBEUI on each.
NETBEUI would be the best solution. I think IPX is used for gaming over the LAN?
Is this correct or not?
I have tried all network cards on NETBEUI, IPX, TCP/IP. The 2 NE 2000 cards still don't communicate. All the settings are identical to my home network of 5 computers but those 2 cards. But, it just don't work.
I think that one of these cards must be dead if one of them gives IPX error and the other one doesn't. Correct?
Does anyone know what the "Error:254" is?
Are the drivers for that one NE 2000 properly installed? Are the machines that have 2 NE 2000's completely different or similar? Yes, the drivers for both NE 2000 cards are properly installed. Both say "This device is working properly".
The machines with the 2 NE 2000 cards are identical.
Oh, the machine showing that protocol error does have a flat cmos battery. Why the other machines not communicating over the network?
