Hello,

I use the Windows XP Operating System. I try to install an old copy of Microsoft Office 97, but it doesn’t complete. I try to install it 3 to 4 times. The htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register itself in the system registry. What I have to do now for my problem?

Any advice I can get would be greatly appreciated.

If you have already installed SP2, then this is one of the reason behind your problem. You can try for disabling the HTML and HTML converter when installing office.

Me too! Spooky that on the same day, but we can't be the first ! Once I'd got past this I found I'd got Word and Excel but nothing else.
I tried installing SR2 afterwards, not before, and got the problem so it's obviously not that.

Don't understand the other 'solution' Sad

I found this solution, tried it and it worked perfectly (requires nerve to go into regedit, however !).

Re: Office 97 does not install on XPSP2 system
My company recently had this problem - I discovered the solution while trying to manually register 'htmlmarq.ocx'

Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

You should see htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx separate keys. Rename them to something else, ie. htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp.

You will now be able to install Office 97, including the HTML option, without incident.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what this section of the registery does or why these files were apparently blocked (intentionally or accidently), but this solution worked flawlessly for me. If you feel uncomfortable, I'm betting you can rename the keys back to the originals and office will work, but if you need to reinstall, you'll possibly have to rename them again.
For anyone interested and if it has not already been answered, changing Htmlmarq.ocx and Htmlmm.ocx back to their original names does not affect the operation of Office 97 once it has been successfully installed.

What is regedit and how do I find it? I have this same problem and I think it keeps spell checker from working on other destops. Thanks

Thanks for the fix! It seems to have installed, though I haven't played with it much yet. I think it'll be just fine. Thank you!

FYI, to go into the Registry editor, click on Start > Run > and type REGEDIT.

Be careful if you don't know what you're doing. You can destroy your system if you change the wrong thing.

It does the job! I work with IT people day in and day out and have yet to come up with anything. It has really only been a few days but there was still no solution till I came across this site. Go figure that it was nested in the registry. One more for Microsoft. Keep up the good work out there.

Richard, thanks for the solution to loading office 97, however I thought that this would sort out my problem with Outlook Express and the Spell Check aborting with an error.
Spell check works with the office 97 products but not in Outlook express. It did before I had to Rebuild my PC from reboot etc.

Anyone any ideas to what I need to do.
