This Error 678 can occur if:
- You are dialing the wrong number
- There is a problem at your ISP or in the telephone network
- Your modem is unable to handshake with remote modem before allotted time.
Solution:
Restart computer and try connecting again.
Verify accurate phone number and dialing properties.
I got an error 678. I also went to verizon tech support and after spending many time she got me to do system restore. I can connect only at night and at the evening very fast. But I cant able to connect during day time.
Try this:
-Delete the account.
-Go to start
-Run
-Type cmd (open command prompt)
-type netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and then press Enter.
Restart your computer.
Recreate the connection.
well error 678 is the pain when it comes to DSL as the error message it self sounds wiered becuz it says its trying to Dial in and being a DSL connection its doing so, this happens becuz of inbuilt feature of windows xp so called PPPoE.
we can try these steps: -
1. shut the computer off, shut the router off and modem and remove the ethernet cable from modem and swap the ends and then power up modem, when it gets stable then the router and then computer (if u have router, then router should come up first and then computer)\
2. check for any kind of Anti virus update if yes then try to remove
3. reinstall the NIC card back on computer
4. call ISP and check the lines

error
sometimes the issue that u are able to use DSL with another computer is because of windows Socket Erro, in short the other pc not working is not pulling up a valid IP address and there is no gateway.

I have got this with my local isp and I dont know what to do. What does error 678 mean?
This error comes when there is a network outage.
Possibly you could delete the old connectoid and cerat a new one
Power cycle the Modem
Check your network adapter
This error can be a result of a corrupt TCP/IP stack. In Windows 95-98, uninstall TCP/IP, reboot, reinstall, reboot, then recreate your DUN connection.

Error 678 on DSL
Contact your ISp and have them give you the DNS1 and DNS2 addresses. In the properties for TCP/IP enter the DSN 1&2 addresses respectively and reboot the system.
