Question: smss.exe - what is smss.exe process removal ?

I have not noticed 'smss.exe' showing in my Task Manager, under the Tab "process" header before on my computer,I noticed the 'smss' just now and I am a bit concerned and so I want to know what this 'smss' does and how to remove the 'smss.exe' from my computer ? Also I want to know whether it is a system process or user process and Is it because of some error in any program exe, virus or worm? Please tell me how this file smss.exe showed up and do I need to remove this file ? And is Removal process easy?

Hello All,

smss.exe is not virus or worm. smss.exe is a process which is a part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

smss.exe is the session manager subsystem, which is responsible for starting the user session. It is called the Session Manager SubSystem and is responsible for handling sessions on your system. This process is initiated by the system thread and is responsible for various activities, including launching the Winlogon and Win32 (Csrss.exe) processes and setting system variables.

After it has launched these processes, it waits for either Winlogon or Csrss to end. If this happens "normally," the system shuts down; if it happens unexpectedly, Smss.exe causes the system to stop responding (hang). This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

hi
Smss.exe Does Not Resolve Forward References in Environment

SYMPTOMS
The COM servers on a Terminal Server client session inherit
the environment either directly or indirectly (through some
other process) from Smss.exe.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because Smss.exe is not resolving all
the environment variables and because of this problem,
the environment with unresolved variables is propagated
to the processes that inherit the environment either directly
or indirectly from Smss.exe.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for
Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For
additional information, click the following article number
to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/152734/EN-US/

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT
Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. This problem was first
corrected in Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition,
Service Pack 5.

Hello Guise,

When I try to install service pack 2. I get the following error massage:
The file c:\windows\system32\smass.exe is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry. Going to my windows task manager window I see that there are no other applications running. Going into the “processes” folder there, I’m told can’t not end that process because it is a critical process. What should I do to successfully install windows XP service pack 2?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi,

I was having the same problem in Windows XP home edition, I tried starting in safe mode with network support, then installing service pack 2 from CD rather than downloading it, that did not work. I then tried it without network support, that worked. Not a very tecnical fix, but it did the trick for me. I had the CD from my technet subscription, but in another forum I read that you can download the service pack, just not sure where... I'll post again if I find that something is not working after the install completes.

I then called Microsoft and smss.exe is networking related, so it makes sense that it would not interfere with the service pack loading if it is not loaded.
