Hello all,

So I'm involved in a technical capacity with the building of a house with in-wall data wiring. Time Warner Cable says they use Cat 5 coaxial cable for both TV and internet cable. However, the contractor plans to lay in some wiring before Time warner gets there. He intends to use RG6 to connect the main cable fed into the basement by Time Warner to the cable modem on the third floor. Based on my internet research, I see no reason why this wouldn't work, and he's already used RG6 for all the TVs, but I haven't been able to find anything really definitive on the exact difference between CAT 5 coax and RG6.

I would appreciate any advice from those who know. Thanks.

FIrst of all Cat 5 is NOT a coax, it is a twisted pair cable that uses 4 pairs. This is the main stay of all structured cabling systems in the world. It was updated to Cat 5e or Category 5e specification in 1998.

The CAt5 cable use an 8 pin telephone style plug, usually called an RJ45.

The Cat 5e cable is capable of supporting up to 1000Mbps (1Gbps) over ethernet.

CAt5 cabling is part of a group of cabling systems, that used to start with Category 1, but now Category 5e is the basic option, with Category 6, CAtegory 6a and category 7 all offering higher band widths. Category 6a and 7 can support up to 10Gbps!!

Many ISPs are using fibre or coax to the home, and then switching to Cat5e through out the home, BUT this does leave problems with the TV.

My sugestion would be to wire the whole house with CAt5e cable, at least 4 ports to the living room, and 2 ports to every other room. Then run RG6 coax to the areas where you will need the TV. It may even be worth running double coax runs to each point to enable the TV signal to be "patched" around the house.

Peter
