Please excuse my novice question, but I need some help...

I recently read an old discussion about symwsc.exe where there was a question about whether it was a virus. I understand this is part of Norton's package, which I use. But one of the respondents said it could be altered by malware and moved to a location other than where it should be, causing virus-like effects. They said it should be in C:/Windows32 if all is OK. I looked there, and symwsc.exe is absent. So what to do now?
I don't know where it's located, but it does show up among my "Processes" in the Task Manager.
I have some kind of infection with my computer that none of the Norton or Adware filters seems to be able to find. In particular, my desktop has been converted to constantly read "SPYWARE INFECTION" in big red letters on a blue screen. The option to reset my deskop is locked, and in the Task Bar there is a red circle with a white X in it that simply reads "Your computer is infected" and does not open or respond to any right-clicking.
I thought this symwsc.exe might be the problem because I just got an error message, a "blue screen of death," that noted that file name but then vanished so quickly that I didn't have a chance to read it all.
Any tips on how to find symwsc.exe if it's not in the right place? How to fix it if it's been moved by some malware? Clues about the bizarre hijacked desktop?

Much thanks for any and all help,
Ryan

I meant that they said it should be located in C:\Windows\System32.
