Voice Over IP Coming to Cell Phones

Bootcamp feature for Friday, September 29, 2006

The advantages of making calls over the Internet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today’s technology. Okay…so the big reason for making calls over the Internet…using what’s called voice over IP technology….is to save money. A variety of services….are free or almost free…but they typically are for making computer to computer calls. Services like those offered by Vonage, Packet8, BroadVoice…and by cable and traditional phone companies….can save you money too…and give you lots of other conveniences. The ability to control call forwarding or listen to voice mail via the Web…are just a couple. At Sonus Networks….which is a leading supplier of Internet phone calling equipment, CEO Hassan Ahmed says….there’s much more to come…

“For example one of the capabilities we have in our solution is what we call Reverse 911. This is a very neat capability that allows you to effectively broadcast out messages to an affinity group. So maybe you’re a soccer coach and the game’s going to be cancelled or rained out. You can very quickly send out voice messages to everyone on your team with a single call.”

And it won’t be long before voice over IP comes to cell phones…that will use new high speed networks. That will bring the ability to have one number that works in your home…and on your mobile phone…

”I think you’ll see the ability to have that as a service very broadly within the next twelve months.”

Sonus Networks CEO Hassan Ahmed. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I’m Fred Fishkin.

There are cellular phone already out there that use voip features/services from gizmo, fring, truphone. The service is not widely used, but software, capabilities and features are already available. Basically anyone access to the internet over lan, wlan or dial up/cellular phone can use voip services from the ones mentioned above to make and recieve calls. Ofcourse you need to make sure you have a smart phone such as the nokia n95 or n80 to do such. Its been used widely more in the indian and japanese market.
