ROUTER RECOMMENDATION NEEDED
Myself is in need of a cheap router (i.e. under $200, or $100 if possible), whichhas 2 ethernet ports (one for WAN, one for LAN), plus a DHCP server, and can route for a static subnet of public IPs. ok?
Netgear, DLINK, SMC, etc.. all make cheap ($50) routers with 2 ethernet
ports and DHCP, but infact , they are not routers, they are gateways.
In other words, there is no way to turn off NAT. I want to use a subnet of
public IPs, not have everything NATted to a single public IP!
Now, Linksys's routers DO allow you to select Gateway or Router mode.
However, once you select router mode, the DHCP server is disabled!
I'm sure Ciscos or Linux boxes can do this just fine, but I'm looking for a
cheaper, massproduced solution that's in a box the size of an external modem.
You haven't specify if your router has ethernet ports. Why don't you just
get a router like a Netgear WGR614. This will give you hard wired and
wireless access. The cable modem plugs into the router. Then you could
directly hard wire 4 computers to it or you could put wireless card in
any of the pcs not near it. There are many more hard wired combinations
available using network switches. You are sharing 1 cable modem so the
download speeds will still be the same. It seems to me you could connect
computer 1 and 2 hard wired to the Wgr614. The 3rd hard wire port would
go to a repeater switch near computer 5 and then hard wire comuputer 3
and 4 to it. Or place the WGR614 next to computer 5 and broadcast from
there via hard wire, wireless or combo of both or use a switch again.
Below is a list of enhancements made on the Router's firmware version 1.45:
1. Fixed the Enable option in the port forwarding option
2. Modify for using remote management into UI , the web upgrade can't work
issue
3. Modify for NAT timer to address Xbox TCP FIN test and UDP connection
4. Added PPPOE service name for PPPOE connection type
5. Modify host name field length from 31 to 39
6. FixED PPPoE mode change that would not restore MTU settings
