Kim to make it really easy to see what you need, here is something that i found from best buy's website. It will help you see the picture a little more clearer.

Networking 101:

Two Computers and a Printer or Two Computers, a Printer and a Dial-Up Internet Connection
You just want to share. Worry not: The easiest home network to set up is one connecting two computers and a printer. By networking your two PCs and printer, you can share and transfer files, folders and programs between the computers, play head-to-head games with the person on the other PC and use the printer from either PC.

If you have a dial-up connectio,n sharing the Internet is easy with software. So the next time your son is looking up Algeria for his report, you can scout which movie to see next — simultaneous surfing... cool.

What you need:

1 Hub or Switch — What's the difference between the two? Look at it like this: a hub is a walkie-talkie while a switch is like a phone. With a hub, only one computer can access another computer at a time, whereas with a switch computers can access files at the same time. A switch costs a bit more but gives each computer its own dedicated bandwidth, so there are no bottlenecks when you're sharing large files between multiple computers.

1 PCI Network Card for each desktop computer or 1 PCMCIA card (PC card) for each notebook.

1 Cable for each desktop computer or notebook.

High-Speed Surfing: Two Computers, a Printer and a DSL Broadband Internet Connection
Blast off! You want an Internet connection to share your high-speed DSL line? Plus, you want to share the printer and play multiplayer games between computers or with someone on the Net.

What you need:

1 Router — A router "routes" your DSL and allows it to be shared on the network.

1 PCI Network Card for each desktop computer or 1 PCMCIA card (PC card) for each notebook.

1 Cable for each desktop computer or notebook.

Free to Roam: A Wireless Network of Two Computers, a Printer and a DSL Connection
Download that delectable roast duck a la orange recipe from the kitchen. Surf the Web from the back deck. Check e-mails and pulverize online opponents from the easy chair, and do it without the hassles of cables. For networking computers in different rooms or on different floors, a wireless network is the answer. Share the Internet with every PC or notebook connected and have the freedom to roam the house.

What you need:

1 Combination Wireless Router/Access Point or a separate Router and separate Wireless Access Point.

1 Wireless PCI Card (sometimes called an adapter) for each desktop computer or 1 wireless PCMCIA card (PC card) for each notebook.

Want A Wireless Network of Two Computers with a Dial-Up Connection?
It's simple. No access point or router is necessary.

What you need:

1 Wireless PCI Card for each desktop computer or 1 wireless PCMCIA card (PC card) for each notebook.
