AOL deleted all the phone numbers, fax numbers and addresses that can be used by their members to cancel accounts from the link I posted a few days ago. They don't waste much time, do they? My thought is they pay "trolls" to search the Internet for negative references to their lousy company, products, and services. They probably keep an eye on pages like this, and once I posted the link from AOL.com itself with info on how to cancel AOL, AOL got involved and deleted all the contact info from that page. They really don't want anyone to cancel!

They want to stop people from cancelling so bad they just made "null and void" their lawsuit settlements with the states of Ohio and New York by deleting that information, which was supposed to be published on their site at all times as part of the terms of each settlement. Hey New York and Ohio--trial lawyers, anyone? Looks like AOL's heading back to court!

When I asked AOL to cancel one account they cancelled the other instead, then tried to make it sound like it was a "mistake" when I called them again several weeks later. There's nothing call reps won't pull to stop people from cancelling so they can get their commissions on "saved" accounts!

Anyone who's reading this page because they need to find the phone number to call or address to write to cancel AOL should use this link:

http://help.aol.com/help/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=ex&bbid=bb92&url=http%3A%2F%2Fhelp.channels.aol.com%2Fkjump.adp%3FarticleId%3D219764&dialogID=155910092.

Edit 03-23-2006: Scratch that link. Scratch any link. Links change constantly since I posted this. For what its worth, all the basic info is quoted on my site now.

Here's a link to the BBB if cancelling with the call reps doesn't work: http://www.bbb.org/.

That's the link to file an online complaint against any company, including AOL. That link saved me from having to pay AOL anything so I recommend using the Better Business Bureau if talking to AOL's call reps fails to result in cancellation.

Just keep in mind when filing with the BBB, there's a section of their complaint form that asks, "How would you like to see this complaint resolved?" Be sure to write that you "do NOT want any more free trials or free service". If you don't write that out in words for the BBB to see, AOL will offer free months as a way to resolve your complaint, rather than refund any money.

I wrote in that section of the BBB's form that AOL had "infected my computer like a virus with adware, spyware, and viruses, so I did NOT want anymore free service from AOL".

Lastly, uninstalling any version of AOL is exceedingly difficult, in fact, impossible, if you want it out of your Registry, too. A good site to check for how to cancel and/or uninstall AOL is http://marahs-aol-log.livejournal.com/. I think it's a good site because I created it myself after the problems I had cancelling AOL. Cancelling was a nightmare. I went through 3 AOL call reps, one supervisor and a few letters between me, the BBB, and a woman named Heidi Jonguist at AOL before both my free trials were finally cancelled "with no charges incurred."

Just a re-statement of what was said earlier for those wondering HOW DO I CANCEL MY AOL ACCOUNT and want to do it any way they can.

AOL does not have an internet address or email address to cancel your account. (Which is odd for the fact that they claim to be so internet and email oriented {LIKE A BAD VIRUS})

The 888-265-8008 number works for cencellation. It's by far the easiest and fastest (if you call it easy or fast).

The Fax number 1-801-622-7969 is a speedy way to send them the message, but for some reason I think there's a shredder bin next to the machine because it's like nobody actually cancels anything. So for getting anything done this way is really pointless.

The Longer, but sure-thing method is the MAIL in your cancellation, and YES - SEND IT CERTIFIED if you can.

America Online
PO BOX 17100
Jacksonville, FL 32245-7100

Because AOL requests it, you must provide it. The best way is to open a Word document and enter the information in 14 size Arial font.

Quote:

Please Note: If you choose to write or fax us, please include the nature of your request and account owner's full name, phone number, address, and handwritten signature. Additionally, for account security purposes please provide ONE of the following:
Primary Master AOL Screen Name (this is the first Screen Name in the drop down menu on the AOL login screen)
The last four digits of the payment method used on the account - for your security, please send only the last four digits
The answer to your Account Security Question

Follow this format as it seems to work well with others who have tried it:

Quote:

AMERICA ONLINE CANCELLATION REQUEST

Please cancel AOL billing account (enter AOL account number if you have one) for:

Account Name: John Q. Smith
Home Phone: 000-555-5555
Alt. Phone: 000-555-5556 (definitely list any phone numbers you may have used to active your AOL account)
Billing Address: (make sure its your full address including any apt. or suite number)
Screen Name: (only use the primary screen name in which you log into AOL with, if you have multiple screen names)
Answer to Secret Question: (Personally I don't like to give out the last 4 digits of any account information and this one is much easier for me to remember)

With your life's profile listed above, MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR SIGNATURE ON IT. If you do not follow their instructions in entirety, they have already disclosed their right to refuse your cencellation in that 50 page long disclaimer you agreed to when you signed up with AOL in the first place.

Once this has been done, do what you can to delete anything related to AOL off your PC (even AOL Instant Messenger). Sometimes there are things related to an AOL credit account and you (or your child) may inadvertently sign you back up for AOL. Some people have gone as far as cancelling the credit card or banking card their service was associated with. A little extreme, but has helped in destroying the $6 million VIRUS.

Just call the AOL cancellation number which is 1-888-265-8008 and once one of the representatives talks to you (and they will ask you why you would want to cancel) just tell them that you want to cancel because you switched to NetScape or NetZero and they will tell you alot of information about these internet providers and the pros and cons about them. So then just let them talk for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then they will let you know that they will tell you that they will give you give you a free month of AOL.! This happened to me twice !! Its so cool to get the best internet service for no price. If you dont beleive me then just do it your self. [/quote]

I have talked on the chat with an rep and he insisted to call a number, which hang up on me after 5 minutes of hold, so i called the main line, which kept talking about how to sign up, so once i found techinal support, i got a rep to forward me to "cancellation Department" Where i was on hold for 45 $%$%$%$ minutes!!!!! then i get a very rude rep who told me to that i cant cancel my account today, i have to wait UNTIL the end of the cycle and then they will cancel the account. So ONE day before i call them and ask them to cancel the account, but again, i didnt have the patiences to stay on that annnoying cancellation line. so you know, on the billing date, i call them again and u know what the $%$%$% told me, YOU CANT CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT TILL THE NEXT BILLING DATE, that girl was like, your account was charged for $24 and then two days later i was charged 10 more for the other $%$. I am REALLY PISSED man, i have no idea what to do, with this guys. And they debit from my check card.
