Recently I have tried to access my router via internet. I use Internet Explorer. It always brings me to a search engine. The reason why im trying to get to me router is so i can forward a part for a application. I have got into the router before. The box that pops up for your username and password doesnt even come up. I have a Linksys WRT54GS Router with Speed Booster. Please I need to figure this out.

i just recently started having this problem. I have two Win XP PC's that are connected to my WRT54G v.2 router by wired connection. I cannot get on the internet with one the PC's and I also cannot access the linksys router controls by that IP address on that same PC.

I type 'ipconfig' on the dos prompt and the IP is indeed 192.168.1.1. I ping that ip aswell and get four replies. Now, turning on/off the router but I still get a 'page cannot be found' error in the browser.

Can somebody plz help this is really irratating me and I would like to get on the internet.

Thanks for any help.

ive been having this problem to, using internet explorer i could not access 192.168.1.1 , i downloaded the latest firmware from linksys and saved it by luck, then i held down my rest button for 30 seconds. i typed in 192.168.1.1 and it poped up manage mode asking for a firmware update and allowed me to browse for the version i just happened to have and it installed it. i still couldn't access 192.168.1.1 using internet explorer however when i tried firefox the user name/password screen came up. i left the user name blank and put "admin" for the password and gained access. however i still do not have access to the internet thus far. dont know if this will help but theres the problems and solutions ive found so far.

All of a sudden when I try to get into 192.168.1.1 the password I have always used won't let me in. Does anybody know why this happened or what I can do to fix it so I can get into 192.168.1.1?

well due to a recent power loss i just fixed the same problem, my router had somehow got reset. the fix for me was i had to leave the user name blank and the default password is "admin". fired right up for me

Should anyone have this problem, you can go to the Linksys site and download a free wizard that walks you through the set-up process. The operating system on my laptop had to be reinstalled last week and in the process, I lost the ability to use the router. The set-up wizard reestablished my router capabilities, and all is well again with the use of my router.

Please make sure your default ip is 192.168.1.1

This was not correct for my router. Mine ended up being 192.168.15.1

Big difference there. The default depends on the router you have. Mine has vonage built in so the normal default did not work.

If you still can not get access to 198.168.1.1, then check you Proxy Network settings.

Many ISP,s use proxy networks, andf it messes up the access to local IP address.

Just go to tools in the IE menu, then Internet options, then the connections TAB, then at the bottom, click on LAN Settings.

If you have the Proxy network box ticked, then that is your problem. Unclick this box (windows will rember the setting for when you want to tick it again) then accept the changes and access your router.

REMEMBER TO GO BACK AND RE TICK THE PROXY NETWRK BOX WHEN YOU ARE DONE!!!!

Just did a new build. Installed XP, went to update the router and, as the instructions suggest, typed "192.168.1.1" into IE. Instead of getting the setup interface, it Googles "192.168.1.1" instead. The first link it suggests is to this thread.

I'm guessing this is what you did, too.

So I try again, this time typing in "http://192.168.1.1/". Success!

I think without the http, the browser follows different protocols. V. annoying though.

Hope this helps

regards
i have the same problem, but something that is really bothering me is that i can't open ipconfig. When i go to start --> run, i type ipconfig and press enter, and then in a blink of an eye the window just closed by it self. It does the same every time i try it. This problem never hapened on my PC before. Can someone help me with that?

If I could be bold enough to start from square one to get you into your Linksys Router Control Panel.

1) reboot computer
2) ensure that your inernet browser proxy setting is off

go into control panel of xp > internet options . connections . lan settings make sure all are unchecked

3) there seeems to be some confusion over the ip ranges

the router hands out a seperate range of ips starting with 192 to each of the computers on your network

192.168.1.100 to 150 or whatever the rotuer is set to

some people seem to be confusing the routes own

192.168.1.1

the computer's ip will have that extra set of digits
other ranges will be assigned by your isp within whatever range they are given

the 192 range is a seperate private ip for internal networks only

4) now type the http: address into your browser

http://192.168.1.1

the user name is generally admin
password is either usually blank or admin
at the worst check your manual for these settings
If someone else has played around with the router and has set a password just reset the router using a pin or whatever at the reset switch
Remember at the worst you can always reset the router back to factory defaults and start over

5) Lastly sometimes at some points internet explorer ( i.e.) will not let you
get to the control panel. Try an alternate browser such as firefox

Badger Linux
I had the same problem but I was able to connect to my router setting on another computer on my network. What I realized was that whenever I tried to connect to my router (Linksys WRT54G) using my Google address bar I kept getting a list of web pages with people having the same troubles but when I went back to using the IE address bar I was able to reach my settings with the 192.168.1.1 Go Figure
Good Luck
Note I have been using this for months and decided I would log in
and do smoe changes, I found that i could not connect to gateway.
Would keep coming up with Google search engine.

I have two users logons my XP desktop two for my self and two other
users logons in the family.
I tried clearing everything on the internet tempory files no luck
I then tried my second xp logon and went on no problems, also
tried the other XP users logons and they worked.

Can only think that some thing has gone wrong with my mostly used
XP User Logon have not found out What yet.

But the answer for now is create another logon go to internet explorer
and it will connect if the address is 192.168.1.1 or whatever it is.

I type in http://192.168.1.1 then it says "The connection was refused when attemepting to contact 192.168.1.1". What does this mean I am confused. Im trying to forward my ports so I need to know. Ive been to www.forwardport.com and the first or second step is to type in 192.168.1.1 into your web browser (fire fox for me).
oh and if your trying to forward your ports u keep Obtain an IP address automatically off. You need to dot in Use the following IP address.
