I have the same problem with my sbc yahoo browser freezing the comp and i dont have that .dll file that some ppl delete that makes it work but can someone tell what is wrong with my comp by reading my hijackthis file...

Well I have been having the same problems. Internet Explorer 6.0 freezing up exspecially when using a search engine and clicking on a link. I also have gotten the cursor stuck as a pointing hand etc....................
I finally figured out after downloading Ewido and scanning my PC that all of this was caused by my comcast toolbar I recently download. Sadly or should I say Ironic the whole reason I downloaded it was for an extra security scanner for annoying spyware and tracking cookies! Only in this case it installed malware which was probably the whole cause for it locking up and tracking cookies that GET THIS the comcast tool bar picked up and removed!!! Spybot, Adaware, and a few other programs were not able to pick it up, but Ewido did and for that I am very thankful!
As for those who whole heartedly believe in firefox they are good browsers with less security issues, but they do not support everything on the web. AND if you take the correct steps in preventing spyware/malware you will almost never have any problems with Internet Explorer provided you keep it up to date and don't install programs bundled with spyware/malware like certain tool bars etc........
Hope this helps as I know there are many reasons that anyone could be haveing the same issues.

Java ssv.dll causing the problem

In my case the java(jre1.5.0_06) ssv.dll file was causing the problem.
Using 'HijackThis' to remove the following BHO entry did the trick.

OK... i think i may have one solution here. i was really pissed because
i thot i had some super low level corruption when i began to encounter this very same problem. whenever i clicked on any link in an email or on a web site ( unless the link was in-house ) a small window would begin to pop up and then just hang there and freeze and not respond. it would not lock up my computer just the proverbial and haunting hourglass and no nothing until i closed the pop up window or three finger salute ctl-alt-del and stop the task, etc. well, i scanned the web and googled and dogpiled and got all sorts of suggestions but none of them worked. then i got to thinking, hey, my google tool bar was acting up and maybe that was getting in the way? i dunno, but it was worth a try. i had already uninstalled google toolbar but the problem remained. and the last thing i wanted to do was try to reinstall IE-6, especially when several other folks said they did do that and it did not solve their problem. so i went ahead and tried to install the beta version of google tool bar and guess what, THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED!!! Like Doc in Back to the Future I, " Do you know what this means? Something I invented finally works!!" Anyway, the hint was the google toolbar getting buggy and even not showing up in the toolbar place. Solved a world of headaches for me cauz i had resorted to going into the code of each link and just cut and pasting it into my internet explorer address window. ok, let me know what you think! kind regards and good luck. michael

Hello,

In everycase this is not true that you IE have problem. Sometimes your computer respond slowly then also this will happen. If you think your computer is fast enough to work then there may be problem in IE. If you want to close IE then click Alt + Ctrl + Del and check if the process is responding or not. If responding the wait for a while and if not then close appliaction.

Hi,

I am also using firefox and never such problem. This problem is very common in IE 6. I suggest you to use Firefox as your Browser.

I found an easy fix...
Few weeks ago the problem started when I could not open any link from IE 6 that opens in a new window and could not open links from Outlook Express. I work under XP SP2.

The tool that helped me was Microsoft RegClean, You can download it from

I would like to thank avfc2k and dabrooklynking for their helpful solutions to this problem. I too started with an inability to open new windows in IE last week. I found a fix (I thought) on the microsoft website to disable IE add-ons. I did this to the req.dll add-on I found and everything was fine until Tuesday when I, too, recieved the virus scan alert that I had a trojan horse. I tried several of the fixes that Symantec recommended, with no luck since virus scan could not remove the file. I was about to pay for a phone repair with Symantec when I found this site and your solutions. Needless to say, a problem I spent two days troubleshooting was solved in less than 15 minutes--and for free. Thank you again.

My first symptom, less than a week ago, was the inability to launch a new window via shift/click, etc. After running every anti-spyware tool I had (AdAware, SpyBot, Yahoo Anti-Spy, Microsoft Malware tool), a couple of days later I found a "solution" on another forum involving the Microsoft advice and downloading something called iefix. Although it didn't do a lot beyond what others recommended, it did fix the hang and inability to open a new window...temporarily.

After the next reboot, I was back to the same situation. I figured that my choices were now SP2 or Firefox. Yesterday I started the SP2 download, which crashed, and I haven't seen the "you have updates" icon in the system tray since.

Today I came home to find that the PC now had a virus detected by Norton, req.dll. Also, winlogon.exe is doing a serious dance with the cpu. Norton is identifying req.dll as a Trojan, but can't fix it. A search on Symantec's site for req.dll is fruitless.

Several Google searches later, I found this thread, where avfc2k laid out a simple solution. In my case, I found that BHO Demon (recommended elsewhere) could not "see" all of the browser helpers until after the files were deleted by killbox. The virus files were gone after the reboot, but the link/new window problem remained. I then used BHO Demon to delete a lingering registry entry for req.dll, and the link problem is resolved.

After another reboot (to make sure that it didn't come back, at least short term), I still have some incidence of "Action Cancelled" sub-pages in Yahoo, but don't really care because they're only ads anyway.

So, mostly fixed, and I am most grateful to those who have provided guidance, especially those who didn't just parrot pages from Microsoft. As someone who has written a lot of software over his career, I'm fascinated. As a computer consumer, I'm mad as hell.

i had exactly the same problem of pointer just staying as a pic of the hand
heres how i solved it
take a look in c:\windows\system32
if you have a file called req.dll that is the problem
not everyone that has this problem will have it i believe there are other causes too
if you have this file here is how too delete it as you cant either in windows or dos
(dont worry this file is spyware and not a windows file)

Download a program called killbox. http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
Click on "Delete on Reboot", in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box
type or copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll
and click on the button with the white cross in a red circle.You
will get a question "File will be Deleted on Next Reboot"
answer "Yes", followed by "File will be Removed on
Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?", answer "NO" then follow the same procedure for the following files :-

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Once you have entered the last one, when it asks "Do you want to reboot now" answer "YES" it will then reboot your
computer and remove the files.

then the links should all open fine if the req.dll is the problem

I had this problem for all of one hour...The cure that worked for me was running Lavasoft's Ad-Aware program with most recent updates. It found a piece of Malware called NavExcel. I let Ad-Aware remove all instances of NavExcel, rebooted and all worked fine. Hope this works for others.

I had this problem and it drove me insane, i spent a whole afternoon trying to fix this. Im not exactly sure what caused this but after alot of searching it seemed like the index.dat file was corrupt, as i have a large hdd and the temporary internet files folder was set to 1000mb. i tried all the fixes available on the internet, from windows, all the start->run> blah blah edit registry etc. Absolutly nothing gets it. A temporary fix is to double click with the right mouse button on the window that you just clicked the link. The only solution i could get was using system restore. I have never used it before and must admit im not a big fan but it worked without modifying much of my system.

As a temporary fix ( just to stop the freezing and open your link)

when the browser freezes after clicking, right click the window that is frozen on the taskbar (right click the taskbar item of your window) then click in your frozen window, Your link will open in a new window, and the other page will unfreeze. but yes, M$ is pathetic for not adressing this huge problem...
