For those of you who do not know it is not only possible to recieve free cable tv thru your modem but there are thousands of people doing it. For a cost of about ten bucks you can go online and check out cable tv filters. It is a small filter that will connect to the back of your tv tuner in slot, then attach your coax cable from your modem and you will have all the cable channels from your cable company free. These filters have been in use since the late 70s and there is no way for your cable company to detect them. So have fun watching free tv.

Time warner put a filter on my line at the pole. I still get network channels 2, 4, 5 and then some crappy cable cahnnels like Oxygen , food channel, Romance Channel, golf channel, HGTV, and some others. All of these channels come in crystal clear to my tv via a 2 way broadband splitter.

In addition there are quite a few channels including the upper network stations(7,9, 11,13) that come in but do not come in clear. Last night I wanted to watch mad tv(channel 11) but picture was to distorted. I did a little experiment and loosened the connector (all the way) going IN to the splitter. Just enough so that the copper wire is just making connection to the inside of splitter . I learned how to do this one day when i wanted to pick up network stations but just moved in and couldnt find my antenna.. What I found was that if i inserted cable line(I was trying to see if cable service was still on from previous tennant.) coming from wall (just barely plug in so that the inside wire is pretty much the only thing keeping the line in) It acted like an antenna, better even. The only thing is it the line can fall out easily if bumped since it is not tightened.

Back to the digital cable , last night i was going from MAdtv to SNL but i would have to ladjust the cable wire each time i changed channel. Pointi is that when I tune in chlannels 7 9 11 13 all the good channels went snowy with some picture and audio. Time warner in CA hire independent contractors for their installs. I'm thinking he used his own filter that he bought or TWarner gave him a crappy one. Anyway I get a signal I know this could be amplified but don't know how to do it. You would probably have to find what size capcitors are in the filter. Probably be easier to just take the filter off or pay for the service.

                                      Sorry Guest 1,
There isn't anything out there that will help you pick up the channels again unless they take the filter off of the line. Internet runs on a certain channel, just like different channels for the TV. If they put a filter on the line then the channels for TV aren't even making it to your place. It would be like putting a bunch of different gadgets and gizmos on a light fixture when the lightswitch isn't even turned on. No power is going to the lightfixture so it doesn't matter what you do to it, you need a powersource for it to have power. The TV needs a TV source to have picture.

I have one of these filters on my line. Can they detect if I remove it (Other than by physically looking at where the filter use to be)?

If your cable company is using slightly older technology then you will find what is called a low pass filter on your cable connection inside the cable box either outside of your house or on the telephone pole. It simply blocks out the frequencies that they portion out for televison signal. So if you sign-up for cable internet and you remove the low pass filter and split the coaxial cable so it runs to your television and you modem then yes you will have cable televisio.

DUH!, I am not saying that you can not connect your television to the cable modem and your cable internet at the same time, YOU CAN. But you are get your basic or standard cable tv with your CABLE INTERNET, then it will not be possible, unless you are paying for your basic cabel/standard cable, WITH your cable internet. Dont think just cause you pay $45 for your cable internet your basic cable tv is free, you might still be required to pay $15 or so for that service. If you want Standard cable tv, then you might be charged $30 or so extra on top of your $45 for your INTERNET. That is how TIME WARNER CABLE does it. There might be other providers that may not block such. So do your research before you sign anything.
i hope you fall of your high horse mister know - it - all!
you dont have to have cable tv service if you are connecting to broadband, phone service can be used instead. Time warner just wants to make sure you are using their service already before they give you the broadband service. If you are using SBC lines and try to get time warner, either you or time warner will have to pay SBC for using their lines, which either way you're paying more. So your best bet is to find out who services your area and just go with them. It WILL come out cheaper in the end...

It's possible for cable service providers to block TV channels in such a way that a cable connection can only be used for cable Internet service. Hence some (but not all) cable service providers offer cable Internet service without cable TV service, although there may be an additional charge. Cable providers have long figured out how to block tv signals if you have not subscribed to it.
